The Fairfield RSL Square Dance Club is a sub-section of the Fairfield RSL Youth Club, which is itself a sub-section of the Fairfield RSL Club.

The club is run by a committee composed of trainer David Todd and dancers from the Fairfield RSL Square Dance Club. It is supported by the Fairfield RSL Club and provides competition Square Dancing for its members.

This Web Site is designed to provide on-line information to both members of the Fairfield RSL Square Dance Club, and Square Dancers in general, about both local club activities and State or National Square Dance activities.

We will endeavour to promote Square Dancing in general, and Square Dancing for youth, to the best of our ability.

So, what is Square Dancing? I could give you a long story about its history and formation but that is not what most people want to hear. Square Dancing can be classified as formation dancing. In Square Dancing, a team is formed by 4 couples. All the moves they are required to make are called out by a caller. These "calls" are choreographed in such a way that, as they go through them, the dancers form lines, squares and circles. In competition dancing, the dancers are judged on the neatness and precision of these formations, as well as the quality of their dancing. Of course, there is no judging in social dancing but it's still great fun to get those shapes just right. Some of the younger dancers try to see just how fast they can go while still keeping in time to the music and maintaining their formations.

There are a lot of variations possible in each dance. You can move through the dance smoothly and slowly and just enjoy dancing with your friends, or you can fly through the dance at breakneck speeds and have a great time (while receiving a very good aerobic workout) all depending on your mood at the time.

There are also various levels of Square Dancing. At the start, you will learn Basic movements. As you progress, you will move onto the full Mainstream level and then onto Plus and Challenge levels if you wish.

So, why not give it a try? If you live in the Fairfield area, you can go to this club. Find the information you need by contacting one of the people on our contacts page. If you live far from our area, move to the links page and you will find a link to the Australian Square Dance web site. Here you will be able to find information on Square Dancing throughout Australia, and contact the right person to answer all your questions.
